Group Leader – Camp Kehilla

Our Summer Day Camp Counselor of Camp Kehilla is a compassionate, creative, enthusiastic young professional. They will assist with the growth and care of campers in a fun and nurturing environment! Each team member of Camp Kehilla will create a safe and enjoyable environment for our campers and staff while maintaining the high quality of programming associated with Camp Kehilla. Group Leader(s) are integral members of the leadership team in camp and are responsible for mentorship and direct support to their counselors and campers in your group.

This position is in Suffolk County, Long Island, but training will take place in Nassau County, Long Island.

Essential Responsibilities for Group Leaders

  • Supervise and support counselors and campers within his/her group
  • Must stay after camp to assist the Division Head with family communication and paperwork; unless a bus counselor
  • The Group Leader will report directly to their Division Head
  • Model appropriate participation and engagement in activities with campers
  • Oversee the group at all times while reinforcing the daily schedule for the campers
  • Be a positive, approachable resource for staff within your group
  • Participate and supervise all activities involving the entire group and/or camp
  • Conduct weekly staff meetings to support staff needs
  • Communicate with direct supervisor regularly about the performance of group counselors, operations of camp procedures, and quality of the camp program
  • Address and resolve any issues or conflicts that may arise among campers or staff members
  • Follow all employment policies and procedures of the Sid Jacobson JCC, including but not limited to those detailed in the JCC Employee Handbook and Camp Kehilla Staff Handbook
  • Attendance at all staff meetings, group meetings/trainings, and camp orientation is required. Including SCIP, CPR, and First Aid.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Degree in special education, social work, psychology, occupational, physical or speech therapy, or other related field with a focus on children with developmental disabilities
  • Minimum 2 years experience in working with children who have developmental disabilities

  • Great communication skills with children of various ages as well as with coworkers
  • Passion for working with children who have developmental disabilities
  • Ability to take skills learned during training and apply them to the daily aspects of camp
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Flexibility and ability to multi-task and make decisions in a fast-paced environment
  • Leadership skills to manage and supervise staff in a supportive manner
  • Strong interpersonal skills to work collaboratively in a team environment and balance the needs of participants and staff
  • Exhibit kindness, patience, and compassion
  • Ability to physically stand, bend, squat, and lift to 35 pounds
