The Sports Coach I is responsible for creating the curriculum and overseeing the day-to-day implementation of a particular Core Sports program. This position is responsible for coaching children from grades 3 to 11 a wide variety of sports, such as soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, volleyball, gaga, capture the flag, and more.
Essential Duties + Responsibilities:
- Develop children’s fundamental movement and sports skills (“run, catch, throw”) and early understanding of sports activities
- Lead sport-specific drill and game components, including setup, clean-up and equipment management with fellow coaches
- Develop children’s self-esteem and confidence by growing their capacity for and success in physical activity in individual and team sport situations
- Collaborate with the Sports Supervisor in creating a curriculum and ensuring day-to-day implementation
- Ensure the health, safety, and welfare of class participants and work towards positive resolution if any issues are presented
- “Plant the seeds” for a lifelong enjoyment of physical activity and sports participation
- Interact with parents, caregivers, and team members in various SJJCC departments to create a strong sense of community
- Light administrative work
- Additional duties as assigned
Qualifications:
- 1+ years of experience coaching children’s sports or related experience
- High School or GED Diploma
- Experience working with youth in a structured environment
- Required to work afternoon hours
- Must have a basic understanding and proficiency in coaching a wide range of sports
- Must be energetic and upbeat, able to maintain a positive attitude throughout the day
- Must be a good role model, hard-working, promote kind behavior, be encouraging and friendly, and exhibit good values
- Excellent customer service skills, ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with parents, caregivers, team members, SJJCC members, and members of the general public
- Comfort with large group instruction; projecting voice in large space.
- CPR/AED/First Aid preferred but not required
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to stand, walk, run, bend, lift, and move actively for extended periods
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25 lbs.(e.g., sports equipment, cones, nets)
- Must demonstrate physical skills and participate in drills and games with children
- Requires clear vision, hearing, and communication abilities to monitor safety and give instructions
Work Environment:
- Work takes place primarily in indoor gyms and outdoor sports fields
- Environment may be loud and fast-paced, especially during games and team activities
- Exposure to varying weather conditions when coaching outdoors
- Must be comfortable working with children and pre-teens in group settings
- Afternoon, evening, and weekend hours may be required based on program scheduling
