The Afterschool Counselor helps create a safe, welcoming, and engaging environment where children feel supported, connected, and encouraged to grow socially and academically.
Key Responsibilities:
- Build positive relationships with children through play, enrichment activities, and daily interactions
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment where all children feel supported and valued
- Support children with homework completion and academic encouragement as needed
- Communicate professionally and respectfully with families, staff, and program leadership
- Assist with maintaining organized and engaging program spaces that support active supervision
- Monitor and ensure the safety and well-being of all participants in accordance with SJJCC and OCFS guidelines
- Maintain regular communication with Site Directors and Assistant Directors regarding participant needs and program operations
- Participate in staff meetings, trainings, and team planning initiatives
- Complete all required annual OCFS trainings and compliance requirements
- Support additional program responsibilities as assigned by leadership
Qualifications:
- 1-2 years of experience working with children ages 5-12 preferred
- High School Diploma or equivalent required
- Must be willing to complete all required New York State background clearances
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment
- Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask
Physical Requirements:
- Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, kneel, and move throughout program spaces for extended periods
- Ability to actively supervise children in classrooms, playgrounds, and activity areas
- Ability to lift and carry supplies or equipment up to 25 pounds
Work Environment:
- Indoor and outdoor program environments depending on daily activities and weather
- Frequent interaction with children, families, staff, and school personnel
- Active, fast-paced youth program setting
