Summer Streeters Head Counselor

Camp Dates: June 29, 2026 – August 14, 2026 (Camp closed July 3)
Staff Hours: 8am-4pm, Mondays through Fridays

Join Sid Jacobson JCC’s Summer Streeters Team and help bring the magic of camp to campers, ages 3-13 years old. We are looking for enthusiastic hard-working individuals to work as Head Counselors at our Day Camp in East Hills, NY. Camp runs from Monday-Friday, June 29-August 14, with pre-camp orientation in May and June.

Essential Duties + Responsibilities:

  • Daily supervision of campers, including supporting campers during various camp activities, trips, lunch, and swimming
  • Supervise staff, including counselors and junior counselors
  • Become well-versed in all aspects of the camp program, including but not limited to health and safety protocols, camp values and goals, and the mission of the JCC
  • Ensure that all safety procedures are strictly enforced, and any incidents are both handled and documented in a timely manner
  • Communicate regularly with Camp Directors, as well as with camp families in order to provide the highest level of support for each and every camper
  • Come prepared every day to fully participate in camp activities, including the camp swim program
  • Guide group and participate in activities that commensurate with the abilities, limitations, and needs of all campers
  • Read and fully comply with the camp policies set forth in the staff guide that will be given at orientation. This includes rules and regulations, dress code, and emergency procedures
  • Exude enthusiasm for camp values

 

Qualifications:

  • Pursuing /or holding bachelor’s degree in the field of education and/or social work is preferred but not required
  • Experience working with children in a camp or school setting preferred but not required
  • Strong ability to work in a fast-paced environment and communicate
  • Ability to work in a team setting

 

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be able to walk, run, bend, lift, and move continuously throughout the day while supervising and participating in youth activities and transitions between locations
  • Frequently required to lift and carry program supplies, coolers, sports equipment, and emergency materials—up to 35 pounds
  • Must maintain high energy levels to engage in physical activities, oversee multiple groups, and respond to emergencies throughout a full-day outdoor program
  • Ability to handle small tools and materials, operate radios or phones, complete paperwork, and assist with setup/teardown of activity areas

 

Work Environment:

  • Outdoors for long hours in hot, sunny, or occasionally rainy conditions
  • Daily activities may occur in parks, playgrounds, sports fields, and on neighborhood walks or local trips
  • Occasionally indoor for training, meetings, or sheltering from weather in designated facilities, such as schools or community centers
