FOR ALL SURVIVORS

Through a discussion group and re-energizing forms of exercise, survivors of all cancer types can gain support and build their physical health with other members who are facing similar circumstances.

Power of Words Writing Workshop with Leslie Popkin
People benefit from connecting with their thoughts and feeling and writing is a way to achieve that. Our weekly sessions – comprised of new writers of all level – easily form friendships and share what is on their minds. This mode of communication is so powerful for each participant, especially now during this challenging time.

SPECIAL EVENT

ADVANCES IN CANCER DETECTION AND HENCE SURVIVAL WITH DR. FLEISHER OF MEMORIAL-SLOAN KETTERING
Join us for an open forum with Martin Fleisher, PhD, FAACC, Emeritus in the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. Hear why Dr. Fleisher is so passionate about cancer research as he shares the advances in medicine he has been a part of, what is currently being worked on, and what is to come.

He is considered an expert in diagnostic biomarker assay development and validation. Dr. Fleisher has over 200 publications, including five chapters on his research, and has edited a book on the Clinical Biochemistry of Cancer. He holds five US patents.

RESTORATIVE MOVEMENT FOR THOSE IN ACTIVE CANCER TREATMENT
Experience a gentle, full-body workout designed specifically for those undergoing or recently completed cancer treatment. Our cancer exercise specialist will work with you to gain muscle strength, boost energy, manage stress, increase blood flow, and enhance your quality of life.

For clients who have completed General Exercise STS 101 and have received the approval of the social worker and cancer exercise specialist to move to a transitional exercise class.  STS 201 will reinforce your increased strength & stamina and will assist you in preparing to enter regular exercise classes at SJJCC.

GENTLE YOGA + MEDITATION 101
Participate in a combination of postures, rhythmic breathing, and meditation to reduce fatigue, anxiety and restore a feeling of wellness.

WALKING GROUP
This group offers participants the opportunity to learn pacing, build endurance, and increase energy, while uplifting spirits in a friendly and safe environment. There will be intervals of walking and some walking-specific light stretching and strengthening. Led by a cancer exercise specialist, walks will take place on the indoor track and will transition outdoors when the weather is nicer.

NUTRITION

4 YOUR HEALTH
Cancer survivors will gain a better understanding about nutrition and healthy eating.  Registered dietitians from the Cancer Institute at St. Francis Hospital will help you make the best choices when it comes to a balanced diet. In partnership with The Cancer Institute at St. Francis Hospital.

SUPPORT

PEER PARTNERS
This program is designed to promote peer-to-peer support for cancer survivors who are newly diagnosed, in treatment, or recovering from surgery and for those who have recently completed treatment. Your partner will help you ease into NMCWC and introduce you to the various programs, events, resources, and support that we offer.
