“Rally Round the Flag”: National Ideologies and the Human Unconscious
Presented in partnership with American Friends of The Hebrew University, Flag waving is a metaphor for stirring up the public towards adopting a more nationalistic, generally hard-line stance. Studies led by cognitive scientist Professor Ran Hassin of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem’s Department of Psychology show that exposing people to a subliminal image of the national flag had just the opposite effect — actually moderating their political attitudes. Prof. Hassin will present research from various countries (Israel, the US, Italy and Russia) and examine how subliminal reminders of people’s nationality affect their political attitudes, voting choices and political behaviors.
