COMMUNITY – SOCIAL ACTION AND VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Tikkun Alliance of the North Shore (TANS)

TANS is a collaborative community effort formed to address issues affecting our world today. Our focus on tikkun olam, repairing the world, includes tackling problems such as hunger, poverty and the environment.

The TANS consortium consists of The Community Synagogue, Congregation Tifereth Israel, Mid-Island Y JCC, North Shore Synagogue, Old Westbury Hebrew Congregation, The Reconstructionist Synagogue of the North Shore, Shelter Rock Jewish Center, Sid Jacobson Jewish Community Center, Temple Beth Sholom, Temple Chaverim, Temple Judea of Manhasset and Temple Sinai.

Projects over the past year include:

  • Fed and distributed coats to those in need, simultaneously in five locations across the North Shore of Long Island.
  • Collected and distributed prom attire for the Long Island Volunteer Center’s Prom Boutique, serving 1,573 at-risk youth.
  • The “From Our Table to Yours” food recovery awareness program provides local food shelters with unused food left over from events and gatherings.
  • “Birthday in a Box” program continues to host birthday parties and supply basic baby care items for children and mothers living in a shelter.

If you are interested in social action and tikkun olam, perhaps the TANS committee is the place for you to "give back" to your community. Join us in making a difference in the world!

Pack it up for Purim
In partnership with UJA-Federation of New York, AmeriCorps and Metropolitan Council on Jewish Poverty

Each year, Jews around the world send food packages to their neighbors as part of the Purim celebration. In the spirit of the holiday, we’re hoping to collect 2,000 nutritious food packages for needy New Yorkers. Donate nutritious, non-perishable goods in the JCC lobby. All packages will be donated to the INN.

For a suggested shopping list for your package and more information on how you can volunteer, contact Mary Modica, Americorps Volunteer Coordinator, 516-484-1545, ext. 116, mmodica@sjjcc.org
Tuesday, February 14-28

Our Newest Project: From Our Table to Yours - A Food Recovery Initiative

All children deserve to celebrate their birthday! It’s Your Birthday … in a Box provides a way for community members to host a birthday party for a child living in a shelter. Volunteers from our TANS temples and JCCs are preparing these special birthday boxes for children on a year-round basis.
